Motorcycling (Biking) in New Zealand

The very first thing to get even before the bike is the Motorcycle Atlas of New Zealand, I believe it is cheaper in the UK. This is used as our Bible and we always plan our routes from this atlas. The second thing is the weather, I use this site for a longer forecast and as a guide as to which side of the island to travel on

ACC Levy

All motorists in NZ pay an ACC levy with their vehicle registration (UK car tax), and for motorcyclists it is currently $254 total per annum. Because of the cost of 2 wheeled accidents the ACC wish to increase it to $754 for bikes over 600cc. This is going down like a lead balloon at the moment with protests etc. I guess there will be a compromise, we will know in the new year. There is obviously a compromise the level being around $400, final figure to be decided. This is typical UK politics, forecast an outrageous sum then everyone is relieved when a big rise is announced but much lower than the original.

Latest figures
Mopeds 50cc and under will pay $129.24; motorbikes up to 600cc will pay $327.70; and bikes over 600cc will pay $426.92.

Why The Ulysses Club?

The name comes from a poem of the same name by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It tells how the great Greek hero Ulysses, now middle aged and securely in charge of his kingdom of Ithaca, is getting bored with things around him and longs to go adventuring again with his shipmates of old. It describes very well indeed the sort of person who still has enough spark to go on riding into middle and later years. Too long to quote here, you will find it in any good poetry anthology, such as the Albatross Book of Verse.
